The Last Tram (Glasgow) by Charles A. Oakley. Corporation of the City of Glasgow 1962 [ebook]

£3.25

Book card covers 9”x 6.75” pp.124 printed throughout on semi-art paper profusely illustrated in well-reproduced B&W half tone photographs engravings, maps and cartoons.

It is odd how many municipal authorities, having condemned their tram networks as expensive, out of date and causers of traffic congestion, in favour of the internal combustion engine and the motor car, suddenly became all nostalgic when the last tram ran and commissioned commemorative booklets.

Description

This is a particularly good example well-designed by Ronald Bell and written by Charles A. Oakley who had a track record in writing about industry. (In 1939 he produced an “Industrial Map of Scotland” with an index listing over 2500 businesses). The book is not written in an academic style but does contain all the information about routes and dates that anyone could wish for.

It is a testament to its quality that Glaswegians were prepared to pay 10/6d for it in 1962! (Over £8 at 2015 prices).
