Between 2003 and 2005, I researched, wrote and illustrated three historic walks booklets for Southwark Council. All have long been out of print, although one of them is available as a PDF download from the council website. I tried to persuade them to put this one on as well, but a change of policy diverted resources to other projects. The other two booklets concerned themselves with transport, industry, the docks and the riverside. This one toured the former “village” of Rotherhithe, taking in Lower Road and Southwark Park, looking at the remains of the past which had survived bombing, town planners and property developers. Of course, in the decade which has passed since publication, “Now” has also become “Then” in some cases!

Nevertheless it is hoped that it will still be an agreeable and informative companion for an afternoon walk.
