It should be remembered that some of the older locomotives taken over did not survive long enough to carry GWR plates, and many of the survivors were “Swindonised” out of all recognition, on their first heavy repair.

It is a remarkable achievement for Mr. Allchin to have written and published this at the height of the Second World War.
