Description

This was the first of what has become a triennial series of meetings, which has resulted in the publication of a large quantity of new information, based on original research into the subject. This year, 2014 saw the fifth symposium take place at the Museum in Docklands, under the auspices of the Docklands History Group, with a large and enthusiastic attendance. The Proceedings are due to be published in 2015

The first Symposium was perforce a small scale event, due to limited funding and the size of the historic venue thought appropriate to the occasion. There was an attendance of less than 30 and again due to limited funds being available only 100 copies of the Proceedings were produced. They sold out quickly to people who had been unable to attend and the document was “out of print” within weeks. Now here is an opportunity for the hundreds of attendees at subsequent Symposia to complete their collection of Proceedings at a cost much cheaper than second hand copies fetch – cheaper even than photocopying one in a library!

An Apprentice at Mills and Knight, Nelson Dock, Rotherhithe 1948-1953 – Bryan Cumings.

Castles Shipbuilders and Shipbreakers on the Thames (incl. Rotherhithe) – Robert and Linda Tate.

The First Post Office Steam Packets Built at Rotherhithe 1820-1822 – Dr. Roger Owen.

The Shipwrights –from Craft Guild to Trade Union – Stuart Rankin. (The mediaeval Shipwright’s Guild was based in Rotherhithe and the proto-Shipwright’s Trade Union met at the St. Helena Tavern).

Charles Lungley’s Ships (a Rotherhithe and Deptford Shipbuilder) – Peter Newall.

These papers represent a substantial contribution to the Maritime History of Rotherhithe.
