In the face of wartime petrol rationing, two Yorkshire engineers called Bolsover designed a two-cylinder light steam engine with only 20 moving parts, which could be installed in any light car chassis, “with the help of any good mechanic”. A mileage of 180 per cwt. of coke nuts burned was claimed. A more complex four-cylinder radial engine was also proposed. We have no idea how many of these conversions were carried out, but surely, the Bolsover steam car deserves a place in the annals of steam power on the roads.
