Description

He joined the North Eastern Railway aged 23 in 1908, was appointed Operating Supt,, NE Area LNER in 1924, and Divisional General Manager at York, from 1936 to 1947. He was awarded the CBE for service during the War.
A well-written booklet, by a man who from a lifetime of service, knew the railways of the North East better than anyone else.

A lineal descendant of the splendid line centenary booklets published by the LNER, and written by the Company’s Press Officer, George Dow. Iu fact the last of those came out in very Early British Railways days, after Dow’s appointment as Public Relations and Publicity Officer for the Eastern and North Eastern Regions. In early BR days, publications were strictly controlled by the Centre, and not infrequently the subject of Turf Wars, between the Railway Executive and the British Transport Commission. After his departure to become PR&PO of London Midland Region, Dow managed to produce some attractive material, but when Eastern and North Eastern regions were given their own departments the incumbent at York became the plodding and unimaginative S. W. Jesper, son of a former North Eastern Railway Chief of Police.

The region at that time did not have an employee with the history research and writing skills of a George Dow or a D. S. M. Barrie, it was natural that an external author would be sought. There could have been few better choices than Charles M. Jenkin-Jones,who was not only the outstanding railway operations manager of his day, he was literate,, educated as a classicist at Oxford, in retirement he had written a history of Britain’s railways in WWll.
